Changes in Place of Service Regulations

In mid-October, CMS issued a transmittal to revise and clarify national policy for Place of Service (POS) code assignment. Instructions are provided regarding the assignment of POS for all services paid under the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule and for certain services provided by independent labs. In addition to establishing a national policy for the correct assignment of POS codes, instructions are provided for the interpretation or professional component (PC) and the technical component (TC) of diagnostic tests.

Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) Transitions (October 2012 update)

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is conducting a multi-year process of consolidating the 15 MACS that process Medicare claims and enrollments into 10 jurisdictions. Medicare officials aim to streamline the system by re-bidding contracts for the companies that oversee claims processing, program enrollment and other administrative functions. Although not all contractors will change, the method for designating MACS will change from the current numbered regions to lettered regions. Physicians in California, Texas and several other states are set to experience a contractor change by the end of 2012 or early 2013, but the full consolidation of MACS will take several years.
